Nina Gross works across drawing, printmaking, animation, writing, sculpture and installation to consider the traces we leave behind. Contemplative and self-reflective, her imagery evokes a quiet sense of lack and longing. Drawn to time-intensive processes and sustained acts of care, she balances intuitive expression with precise and intricate detail, exploring notions of memory, smallness, connection and time. She exhibits across London and Sussex, and has had work selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf working drawing award. Her most recent commission was for the Bethlem Gallery.

She is interested in how processes at the molecular and cellular level underpin the human psychological landscape. Through collaboration with SATURNA, Nina hopes to investigate the processes of biological “smallness” in the form of RNA, and how this may translate into the human lived experience, both physically in terms of the mechanistic role in neurodevelopment and disease, but also as a metaphor – a being in a continuous choreography of life, their role and identity shaped by their surroundings and interactions.

She envisages initially investigating RNA’s dynamic configuration through the medium of experimental iterative animation and paper sculpture. Animation uses a process of gradual adjustments to a single image, each frame and subtle change informing the next – a manipulation and expansion of time. The folding, unfolding and creasing of paper provides metaphor for fragility, transformation and molecular memory.
